Not to miss in KL

25/11/2024

Here are my top sights to see in Kuala Lumpur. We did pretty much everything on our list in 3 days so that is plenty of time to see the famous attractions listed below!

KL Tower and Sky box

KL Tower is a must when visiting Kuala Lumpur. It has an observation deck that provides 360 degree views of the city and is also home to two sky boxes on the very top floor. The sky boxes are a great experience to feel completely suspended over the tower and see the views from a different perspective. The sky box system is really effective to ensure each tourist gets their own time and experience in the box. Upon purchasing a ticket, you get a number and added to a queue without actually having to physically stand in a queue! You just take your time, walk around the tower, take in the views and take your photos while listening out for your number. When your number is called, you then enter the sky box and have approximately 1 minute per family. This ensures everyone has an equal turn and that other people are not in your photos. Genius!

Petronas Towers

The Petronas Towers are very impressive. They are the worlds tallest twin towers standing at 451.9 metres tall, and 88-stories. The ground floor of the towers is home to an array of shops and restaurants. We ate at Dome and loved it; we even went back for another meal. For a great view of the towers, head opposite the water to the bridge (see photo above).

At night, the towers are equally as impressive lit up in a white light and a fountain show on the water in the evenings.

Merdeka Square

Whilst still interesting to see, Merdeka Square doesn't have as much to see or do there than the other attractions. There is a tall impressive monument and of course, the I❤️KL sign which is a great photo opportunity and reason enough to go.

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are truly a spectacular sight. As soon as we pulled up in our GRAB taxi, it takes your breath away with its grandeur. We were pleasantly surprised to hear that it was free to go up the vibrant colourful steps and to explore the caves at the top. I would advise to get there early (I think we arrived at 9am) to avoid the crowds. This was a great time for us as there weren't many people at all which made it better for photos and easier to get up the steep steps. If you don't see many monkeys on the way up, don't worry and be patient as on our way back down, they all came out! Be mindful of your belongings as they like to grab anything in sight. You can also buy some small bananas to feed them.

Thean Hou Temple

Echoing the Batu Caves, the Thean Hou Temple is free to explore and is another mesmerising sight that takes your breath away. You truly feel like you are surrounded in Malaysian culture with its colourful red appearance and hanging lanterns. A fascinating part of the temple is in the grounds surrounding it as there is a display of the Chinese zodiac signs which has statues of the zodiac animals with years and personality characteristics written on plaques next to the statues. We really liked walking through the display and seeing if our animals/signs characteristics match us.

Jalan Alor Food Sreet

For the foodies of the world and anyone up for trying different foods, Jalan Alor food street is the place to be! It is an outdoor food night market in the Bukit Bintang area of KL. A range of food stalls line the street for 500 metres and red lanterns hang above. It tends to be very busy due to its popularity, but it is definitely worth it. Many of the stalls offer street food such as; meat skewers, chicken wings and noodles etc. A great place to experience when in KL.

Sky Bar at Traders Hotel (view of Petronas Towers)

One of my favourite experiences in KL was sat in the sky bar of the Traders Hotel, drinking a cocktail with an unbelievable view of the Petronas Towers. We timed it so that we were there for sunset so we could see the view in daylight, for sunset and lit up in the evening. It is free to enter and there is no need to book a table if you only want a drink as there are high tables available for walk ins. The bar does however, have a pool and window booths which will need booking. We didn't book and just arrived at the hotel, asked reception about the Sky Bar and they pointed us in the direction of the lift and informed us of which floor to press. The bar wasn't particularly busy so there were plenty of tables and seats to enjoy a cocktail. The area and large windows in the photos above with that view, are at the entrance to the bar so there is plenty of space and opportunities for photos without other people.

Wet Deck at W Hotel

To save on costs due to our trip being multi-centre, our hotel in KL was budget friendly and didn’t have a pool. As we went in August, it was very hot and humid. We had managed to see most of the sights in 2 days so on our last day, we had some spare time so decided to research pools in the area. We wanted to find somewhere nice with a good view and stumbled across the Wet Deck at the W Hotel. The hotel pool area has a great view of the Petronas Towers and was roughly the equivalent of £50 per person for non hotel guests to have a day pass to use the facilities. This was perfect for what we wanted and would highly recommend this for some luxury relaxation time in the chaos of busy KL. Included in the pass, you get a coconut drink and towels so no need to take any. After an afternoon of swiming and relaxing round the pool, we took a change of clothes so we could get ready for the evening in the W Hotel changing rooms and stayed for a cocktail in the gorgeous pool bar area. We loved this as it gave us a great view of the Petronas Towers lit up in the evening while sitting in a luxurious setting with a delicious cocktail. Definitely worth the money!
